Bodies of drowned Bankovac children found
ALEKSINAC - Bodies of the three-year-old girl and the 11-month-old boy who fell into the surging Turija River along with their mother, were found on Thursday by the divers of the Serbian mountain rescue service (GSS), after extensive search of the riverbed and banks, GSS released.
The girl was found first, some 200-300 meters off the place where she drowned, while the boy's body surfaced about a kilometer away.
The children from the village of Bankovac are the first victims of the flooding in Serbia.
Besides the GSS water rescue team, the GSS search and rescue dog teams from Belgrade and Nis were also on the ground, combing the riverbanks from the early hours of the day.
They searched the area along with the teams of the emergency situations sector and members of the gendarmerie.
The little girl and her baby brother drowned on Wednesday in the Turija River, in the village of Bankovac near Aleksinac. The mother, who fell into the river with baby in arms, trying to save the daughter, was rescued by the villagers.
The search was launched yesterday morning, immediately after the report of missing children. The operation ceased as darkness fell and was resumed early in the day.
