Kosovo parliament dissolved

PRISTINA - A majority of MPs voted in favor of dissolving the Kosovo parliament at an extraordinary session on Wednesday, thus clearing the ground for snap parliamentary elections.

During the vote, 115 MPs were present in the parliament, with 90 voting in favor and four against the dissolution of the parliament.

Hasim Taci, Kosovo's prime minister and leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, said that the parliament was not functional, so it needed to be dissolved, RTK2 reported.

Taci said that the parties agreed that the parliament should be dissolved and new elections called.

Petar Miletic from the Independent Liberal Party (SLS) said at the session that Serbs were dissatisfied with the work and non-functionality of the Kosovo parliament and backed its dissolution.

Miletic said that Serb MPs from the SLS were dissatisfied with the failure to resolve the issue relating to the reserved seats for MPs of minority communities, because of which they were boycotting the parliament's work.

For several weeks, Serbs have boycotted the Kosovo parliament's work, disgruntled over its failure to resolve the issue concerning the reserved seats for minority communities.

Under the Constitution, elections will have to be held within a 45-day time frame since the dissolution of the parliament, with June 8 being often mentioned as the possible date for early elections.
