Police nets betting shop robbers

Police operations across the Attica region led to the arrest of a number of suspects believed to be members of criminal organizations, a police statement revealed Friday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at a Roma camp in Megara, western Attica, on nine counts of robbery or attempted robbery in the space of two hours in Megara and nearby Alepohori.

Meanwhile, two suspected members of a criminal gang thought to be behind a number of armed robberies at stores and OPAP betting shops were also detained.

Police believe the two men carried out an armed robbery at a toy store on Varis-Koropiou Avenue in Vari, southern Athens, where they fled with 8,000 euros in cash.

Three Georgian nationals were detained on charges of breaking into the homes of senior citizens and using threats and violence to extract information regarding hidden cash and jewelry from their victims.
