Two dead from floods in Sabac

SABAC - The city administration in Sabac said on Monday that two people had died in that municipality in western Serbia, most likely because they had not followed the evacuation order, so the authorities appealed to the citizens to comply with the instructions of the headquarters for emergencies because the situation with the river Sava was still critical, despite the dropping water level.

"A number of people is refusing to follow the evacuation order, which is why the headquarters for emergencies warns that the situation is such that the safety of those who live near the levees cannot be guaranteed at this time," the statement says.

"Two people died in the villages of Mrdenovac and Krupanj, most likely because they did not follow the evacuation order," the Sabac authorities noted.

According to them, 814 were evacuated from the villages in the Sabac municipality as a precaution between May 15 and 6 p.m. CET on May 18.

The Sava's water level in Sabac at 6 p.m. CET on Sunday was 652 cm above normal, meaning that the river is slowly dropping from the record hight of 660 cm registered 24 hours earlier.

The sandbag levees and defences set up along the banks are stable, but the situation will be critical over the coming days because the levees have soaked up a lot of water.

The headquarters therefore warns the citizens to stay away from the river unless they absolutely have to go there, especially if they are not working on the flood defences.

The local government should put employees of government companies to work on the flood defences, like filling sandbags, the headquarters stated and called on the local people to volunteer.
