U.S. funds Day Care Center for Elderly
NIŠ -- A Day Care Center for the Elderly opened in Niš on Thursday and the official opening ceremony was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby.
The center was built as part of the existing local Gerontology Centre with the funds provided by the United States European Command (EUCOM) to the total value of USD 350,000. The works on the centre construction began in October 2013 under the supervision of the U.S. Army engineers.
The center aims to meet the needs of elderly citizens and their families by providing day care services for the elderly suffering from mental or physical disabilities.
The individuals, who usually live with their families, will be able to spend time there while their families go about their daily business, Kirby said at the official opening ceremony. He noted that the opening of the center constitutes an example of good cooperation between the U.S. government, EUCOM and the Niš local self-government.
Niš Mayor Zoran Perišić expressed gratitude to the U.S. for the assistance and underscored that the City of Niš invested another RSD 80,000 in the project for the utility management of the facility.
