Ivanovic through to Wimbledon second round

LONDON - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic got off to a successful start at Wimbledon by beating Francesca Schiavone of Italy 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the tournament's first round late Tuesday.

The match lasted 92 minutes. Schiavone proved to be a difficult opponent, in particular in the first set, but Ivanovic claimed her sixth victory in as many matches against the Italian.

Ivanovic's next opponent will be Zheng Jie of China, who beat Germany's Annika Beck 6-1, 6-3.

Ivanovic has a 2-2 head-to-head record against Zheng. Their last encounter was at the 2010 US Open, and the Serbian won 6-3, 6-0.

Serbia's highest-ranking female tennis player Jelena Jankovic ended her campaign at the season's third Grand Slam tournament after an unexpected defeat to Kaia Kanepi of Estonia (6-3, 6-2).
