Fire in eastern Attica brought under control

Two farming buildings were destroyed in Keratea, eastern Attica, from a fire that broke out on Saturday and was finally brought under control on Sunday, though not before it razed hundreds of hectares of brush and farmland, authorities said.

There have been no reports of injuries, though several homes in the vicinity were evacuated as changeable winds made is almost impossible for firefighters to contain the blaze.

Speaking to Skai on Saturday night, Keratea Mayor Costas Levantis said the fire broke out on three separate fronts almost simultaneously, raising concerns that it may have been the work of arsonists.

He added that firefighters were able to avert the flames from an old landfill where thousands of tons of garbage has been buried.

The three fronts have came together late on Saturday and formed a single front that was at least 2 kilometers long, Levantis added, saying the expanse of the fire made its containment that much more challenging.
