ECB, NBS sign agreement on forgery detection

FRANKFURT/BELGRADE - President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi and National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Jorgovanka Tabakovic signed in Frankfurt on Tuesday a cooperation agreement on preventing and detecting counterfeit euros in Serbia, the NBS has stated.

Based on the document, the ECB will supply the NBS with the technical specifications of the original euro banknotes and the classification of counterfeits.

The NBS will provide the ECB with information on new forgeries and monthly reports on all counterfeit euros detected in Serbia.

This is the first agreement between the ECB and NBS since the start of the accession talks between Serbia and the EU.

The agreement was signed during the first high-level political dialogue between the two institutions, held in Frankfurt on July 14.

The ECB organises these dialogues each year with central banks of EU candidate countries that have started the accession talks, the NBS statement says.
