Old Attica train tracks to be transformed into bicycle lane network
The Attica Regional Authority in cooperation with experts from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) are drawing plans to transform abandoned railway tracks into bicycle lanes that if completed may link the Antonis Tristis Park in Ilion, western Athens, to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio, southeast of the capital.
Experts will examine all unused train tracks in Attica, focusing first on the old line between Aghious Anargyrous and Lavrio. The project will explore how these can be linked to promenades and existing bicycle lanes, with the aim of creating a network of bike paths that will run through the municipalities of Aghious Anargyrous, Nea Filadefia, Halkidona, Iraklio, Maroussi, Halandri, Aghia Paraskevi, Pallini, Paeania, Koropi, Markopoulo, Saronikos-Mesogeia and Lavrio. The plan is then to extend it to the Temple of Poseidon, a significant historical site and one of the region's most popular landmarks with tourists.
"Bicycling in Greece, though behind the rest of Europe, is beginning to gain popularity," said outgoing Attica Regional Governor Yiannis Sgouros, unveiling the plan on Tuesday. "The project will begin in Mesogeia, a source of great historical and cultural wealth. The archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, wineries, towns, etc will gain repute and accessibility through the planned route. It is expected to make a significant contribution to growth."
