Tennis: Simona Halep runs for WTA Player of the Month

Romanian female tennis player Simona Halep, next Monday to become the worlds' No.2, runs for the title of the WTA Player of the Month and also for that of the WTA Rising Star Of The Month.

Competing for the WTA Player of the Month in July are Romania's Halep (22 of age), American Serena Williams, world's No.1, and Danish Caroline Wozniacki.

Serena, currently participating in her first tournament, in Stanford, after the Wimbledon, already eliminated three top 20-ranked players from the competition: Ana Ivanovic, Andrea Petkovic and Angelique Kerber.

Simona Halep also participated in a single tournament in July, the one in Bucharest, which she won after defeating in the final match Italian Roberta Vinci, with this becoming the 8th WTA title won by the Romanian player and her second in 2014.

Wozniacki also won a single tournament in July, the one in Istanbul, after defeating Roberta Vinci in the final match. For the Danish this was her 22nd title, but the first she won this year.

Votes for Simona Halep can be cast on the WTA site until Thursday, the results of the inquiry following to be announced on Friday.

The inquiry for the WTA Rising Star of the Month puts Halep face to face with Ukraine's Elina Svitolina and Japanese Kurumi Nara.

Svitolina (19) played three tournaments last month, managing to defend her title in Baku, while Kurumi Nana reached up to the final of the tournament in Washington.

Halep can still receive votes on the WTA site until Thursday, results following to be made public on Friday.
