National Defence Minister Mircea Dusa in a meeting with US Embassy Charge d'Affairs Dean Thompson on Wednesday said that the situation in Ukraine represents 'a reason to worry both for NATO and for Romania, as ally state.'

Besides the situation in Ukraine, the two officials also talked about the development of the situation in the Middle East.

According to a press release remitted to AGERPRES, Dusa reiterated Romania's commitment to the strengthening of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries and appreciated the role of the military base at Mihail Kogalniceanu, which he described as 'an important point in the rotation process of the US troops operating in Afghanistan.'

Moreover, the Romanian Defence Minister informed the US side on the stage of works at Deveselu (eastern Romania).

'Everything goes as planned. The works are going well and all the activities associated to securing the military base keep within the established calendar. Even today, together with Deputy Prime Minister Liviu Dragnea, I shall make an on spot assessment of the stage of the works conducted outside the military base — the wastewater treatment plant, the sewage, the water network,' Minister Dusa also said.

The meeting took place at the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN) headquarters. Dean Thompson was accompanied by Christina Evans, Director of the US Senate Budget Committee's Majority Leaders' Office, Subcommittee on military constructions.

'Christina Evans is present in Romania following the request the US Administration addressed to the US Senate on drawing up the European Reassurance Initiative announced by President Barack Obama,' the cited source points out. AGERPRES
