A few good men
It gives us a great deal of hope that we have a new batch of mayors and regional authorities, as well as university rectors who represent the voice of reason and prudence and are unafraid to stand up to and clash with extreme elements both in society and in their respective institutions.
The newly elected rector of the University of Athens is one such person and he is clearly determined not to put up with the kind of lawlessness and corruption that has dogged the countrys biggest tertiary education institution in the past.
The mayor of Athens, now in his second term, has also shown that he will not tolerate extreme elements as well as that he has what it takes to run Greeces most important municipality under extremely challenging circumstances.
Greece needs such people people who are not tainted by political affiliations, who have a clear idea of what they want to do and who have the guts to make it happen. Having such people elected or appointed to key posts is the only way to beat the paranoia, fanaticism and ignorance that weigh so heavily on this country.
