South Stream construction in Serbia to start in October

BUDAPEST -- Works to build the Serbian stretch of South Stream gas pipeline will start in October, Gazprom official Aleksandar Siromyatin said on Tuesday.

The construction work in Serbia will be carried out regardless of the situation in Bulgaria, where the work on South Stream pipeline has been suspended until the project is fully harmonized with the EU regulations, said Siromyatin, who heads the Russian gas and oil giant's international projects department.

Speaking at a conference on the natural gas market and the prospects and opportunities for the Danube region, held in Budapest, Siromyatin said that the building permit for the South Stream section through Serbia will be issued by the end of September.
