Support from Austria for Belgrade Pride Parade

VIENNA - The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) supported on Thursday Belgrade's Pride Parade scheduled for Sunday.

Head of the SPO delegation in the European Parliament Evelyn Regner stressed that there is no place for discrimination in Europe.

I am glad about the Serbian government's support which heralds peaceful demonstration during the weekend. Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the situation and continue to fight for the Europe of acceptance and nondiscrimination, she advised.

The Social Democratic LGBTI Organization (SoHo) expressed hope that the Pride Parade will be held in Belgrade during the weekend, adding that this is an important signal of acceptance of differences and varieties across Serbia.

SoHo head Peter Traschkowitsch said in a statement that he hopes that the government will fulfill its promise and that the Pride will be held without any incidents.

The Orthodox Church and right-wing groups will again try to mobilize citizens against the Pride, but we are confident that the majority of Serbian society will set limits to these homophobic machinations, he said.
