The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) director, George Cristian Maior on Friday said in Timisoara (northwest of Bucharest) that after the presidential elections he would submit his resignation from his position to the President-elect, deeming that this is normal and specifying that he was never asked to become Prime Minister.

'From my point of view, I'll go to this new president, table my resignation and it will be at his disposal to appreciate if my activity at the head of this service was appropriate and could go on or he should make another decision. I have no problem from this viewpoint', George Maior said.

Answering a question by the reporters, he highlighted that the intelligence services should not interfere in politics no matter what, yet in the electoral campaigns in particular those with such a great stake the political discourses bring to the public attention the intelligence services too.

'The intelligence services should not implicate at all (in politics — editor's note), to make myself clear. Unfortunately, you see, in the context of any electoral campaign, especially at this highest, strategic level, for the President, the political discourse brings to attention, unfortunately, the intelligence services too, yet the SRI does only act within the parameters of independence and neutrality, it stays far from this political fight. We are not interested in the outcome, we are only interested to do our job well, even under these circumstances', the SRI chief says.

He added that as for him he was never proposed to and never discussed with anybody to become Prime Minister of Romania's Government, and that in a democracy it is normal that the future president nominates the SRI chief.
