Bulgaria's Tobacco Purchase Campaign Fails To Attract Interest

The tobacco purchase campaign in Bulgaria has began, however there is zero interest among buyers, Bulgarian private TV station bTV reports.

Due to the heavy rainfalls during the summer season, this year's crops are of poor quality, manufacturers admit. As a result of the rains, tobacco growers had to invest more money in the drying and storage process. Their production is already dried and ready for sale, bTV informs.

People in the Southwest region of Gotse Delchev hope for better prices that will at least cover the cost of tobacco production.

Last year, the purchase campaign was delayed, and it nearly made tobacco growers bankrupt, the TV station reminds.

In order to protect the local tobacco producers, a Tobacco Association was established in the Southwest region of Ablanitsa. It will draw on the experience of similar Greek associations and will hire independent tobacco experts who will assess the quality of the raw material during the purchase campaign.
