Monica Macovei, an independent candidate in the November presidential election, declared that if one of her opponents Victor Ponta, Klaus Iohannis, Calin Popescu Tariceanu or Elena Udrea wins the presidency, the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) "no longer exists".

She said on Tuesday evening in Ploiesti (north of Bucharest): "In the event of Ponta, Iohannis, Tariceanu, Udrea win these elections, DNA's future no longer exists. Either its head would be replaced, or it is merged with another institution — many ways are possible. Indeed, Tariceanu tried it in 2007, after he sacked me from the government. He had the emergency ordinance prepared to merge DNA with something else. (...) Politicians hate to be inquired, investigated. No one likes it, but the difference is politicians are able to use political means, such as law changes, emergency ordinances, government decisions, laws to satisfy their lust, to avoid further investigations, to keep their wealth untouched, steal and keep both their money and their freedom."

Within this context, she claimed being the only presidential hopeful able to guarantee the continuation of the fight against corruption, and that a legist would be the best president for Romania.

"The only guarantor of law and of continuing the fight against corruption and crime in general, among all the candidates, it's me. A legist president is the best president, because they know the law. (...) The first thing for a society is law. With a fair Judiciary and good laws, it's possible to change the society in a good way," Macovei added.

She visited Ploiesti on Tuesday on her campaign trail; she went to one of the city's markets and met her supporters.AGERPRES
