Monument honouring emperor Nicholas in Belgrade

BELGRADE - The monument honouring the last Russian emperor Nicholas Romanov was placed in the Devojacki Park in Belgrade on Monday at the spot where the Russian representative office stood during the Dukedom of Serbia.

The 7.5 metres high monument with the pedestal weighs over 40 tons and the sculpture itself is around 3.5 metres high.

Assistant City Secretary for Culture Aleksandar Lukic stated that the monument honours the great Russian emperor who was a true friend of the Serb people who did a lot for Serbia in World War I.

According to a release issued by the Belgrade City Administration, the monument honouring the last Russian emperor is a donation of the Russian Federation and a confirmation of the friendly ties between Serbia and Russia.

According to sculptor Andrey Kovalchuk, the monument honouring emperor Nicholas took half a year to build and Kovalchuk and academician Gennady Pravotorov did their best to achieve harmony between the sculpture with the spot where it would stand.

The monument was made in the classic tradition which is quite rare in contemporary Europe, Kovalchuk said and added that the pedestal contains details linking our era to the historical period honoured by the monument.

The reconstruction of the Devojacki Park should be completed on the Armistice Day on November 11 when it will officially be displayed to citizens.
