Excellent foundation for better relations with Iraq

BELGRADE - Serbia's Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic and Iraqi Ambassador Falah Abdulhasan Abdulsad agreed on Friday that the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries were a good foundation for the development and improvement of the two nations' overall cooperation.

Gasic thanked the Iraqi official for his country's support and protection of international law in helping preserve Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Serbian Defence Ministry stated.

Iraq is Serbia's strategic partner in military economic cooperation, Gasic stressed, adding that the goal was to expand the military educational and medical relations as well, in accordance with the already defined legal framework.

The Defence Ministry will try to promote different forms of economic cooperation through the field of defence, the statement says, adding that Serbian companies had once built some important infrastructure facilities in Iraq.

Gasic congratulated Abdulsad on his country forming a new government, stressed the importance of a continuous exchange of high-profile visits and added that he was pleased that Khalid al-Obeidi had been appointed Iraq's defence minister, since he had acquired his education in Serbia.
