Constitutional Court certifies 1st round of president election; Ponta, Iohannis in runoff

The Constitutional Court of Romania certified on Friday the first round of the presidential elections from Nov. 2 and established that standing in the runoff will be Social Democrat Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Liberal leader Klaus Iohannis.

The second round of voting will be held on Nov. 16, the Court announced.

"The Court confirms the results of the elections for president of Romania held in a first round on November 2. We notify the public that a second round of voting will be organised, given that none of the candidates got the number of votes required to be declared president in the first round. A runoff will be organised on Sunday, November 16, with the participants to be Victor Ponta and Klaus Iohannis, in this order," the Court president Augustin Zegrean said.

The decision is final and shall be published in the Official Journal, he added.AGERPRES
