Businessman Milan Beko shot in Belgrade
BELGRADE - Businessman Milan Beko received two gunshot wounds outside of his home in Belgrade on Friday.
Beko was ambushed and shot twice in the stomach.
His driver took him to Urgentni Centar, a hospital that only takes emergency cases, where he was immediately sent into surgery.
His condition following the surgery is stable, but the injuries are serious and life-threatening, deputy head of the hospital Dusan Jovanovic said on Friday.
Beko was admitted at 5:30 p.m. local time with severe gunshot wounds and immediately sent into surgery, Jovanovic told reporters.
"The operation has been completed. The patient is stable, but I emphasise that the injuries are extremely serious and life-threatening," he noted.
Belgrade police chief Veselin Milic said on Friday that Beko was most likey attacked by two people.
The shooter was most likely assisted by one other person, he told Tanjug, adding that he could not say more because the investigation was still ongoing.
"This is a serious crime, attempted murder, which is in the jurisdiction of the Higher Prosecutor's Office, and the police are doind everything to identify the shooter and all who have helped him," he stated.
The police have closed all the main roads in Belgrade on Friday and deployed all their resources to identify the attackers and get to the bottom of this case, he remarked.
"All the people who fit the description of the perpetrators are being interviewed," Milic said.
He told Radio and Television of Serbia the police had not received any indication of a potential threat to Beko's safety.
