Herman Van Rompuy congratulates Klaus Iohannis on being elected Romania's President

President in office of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has congratulated Klaus Iohannis on being elected Romania's President in a November 16 runoff election.

In a press release issued on Monday he said that on behalf of the European Union he congratulates Mr Klaus Iohannis on being elected to the office of Romania's President.

In the same release he says he trust Iohannis to deploy all efforts and get fully involved, together with the Romanian Government, in helping Romania cope with the future political, economic and social challenges. The outgoing President of the European Council, to be replaced on December 1 by Donald Tusk, also says he believes Iohannis will contribute to the continual development of the European Union.

Data released on Monday by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), after the centralisation of reports from 99 per cent of the polling stations show runoff candidate of the Christian Liberal Alliance (ACL) Klaus Iohannis having won 54.50 per cent of the runoff outcome, to 45.49 per cent for the candidate of the alliance of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) and the Conservative Party (PC) Victor Ponta.
