President-elect Klaus Iohannis to step down as Sibiu mayor on Dec. 2
President-elect Klaus Iohannis will step down as mayor of Sibiu City on Tuesday, December 2, the City Hall informed.
Klaus Iohannis has been serving as Sibiu mayor since 2000.
His mayoral responsibilities were taken over by deputy mayor of the German Democratic Forum of Romania (FDGR) Astrid Fodor, who is also considered a favorite in the upcoming election for city mayor.
Iohannis, running on behalf of FDGR, was first elected Sibiu mayor on June 30, 2000, in the second round. He was re-elected in 2004 with 88.7 per cent of the votes. In the 2008 local elections he won a new term as mayor, garnering 83.2 per cent of the votes, and in the June 10, 2012 local elections he was re-elected to the fourth term.
Iohannis initiated a lot of contacts with foreign investors and European Union offices. It is also during his tenure that Sibiu was designated European Capital of Culture in 2007 (together with Luxembourg). AGERPRES
