Vice Prime Minister for National Security Gabriel Oprea, also minister of the interior, said that December 1, Romania's National Day, carries the utmost symbolic significance for the Romanian people.

"December 1 carries the utmost symbolic significance for the Romanian people, a solemn and emotional day when we celebrate Romania, through the power of our national values, traditions, all that unites us as a nation. The National Day, the Romanian Flag, the National Anthem and Romania's Coat of Arms are national symbols each true Romanian carries in his/her heart. And we have the duty to pass them on to future generations. Therefore, we can never forget those to whom we owe this legacy," Oprea said on Sunday in a message sent to AGERPRES on occasion of the National Day of Romania.

The Interior Minister said that alongside millions of Romanians, he is "proud that Romania is today a powerful state, a respected state worldwide and a factor of regional security," which "has earned this status by the actions of those who knew throughout time to put the national interest above any benefit and which has reinforced it by the blood of the Romanian troops in the theaters of operations around the world."

"On the National Day, many of the employees of the defence, public order and national security system are on duty in the country or in missions outside the national borders. As vice prime minister for national security, I want to thank all those who devote their lives to Romania's safety, security and progress," Gabriel Oprea said in his message to the Romanians, wishing them good health and fulfillment of all their aspirations.
