Court approves law for return of Greece's municipal police force

The Council of State, Greece?s highest administrative court, on Tuesday approved the government?s plan to re-establish the municipal police within the national force.

The municipal police was disbanded in the summer of 2013 as part of the government?s drive to meet the public sector mobility scheme targets.

However, the coalition passed a law last year paving the way for the creation of three municipal police precincts (Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes) as well as another 17 municipal police offices.

These will be staffed by members of the national police, former municipal police officers and civilian staff.

They will remain open 24 hours a day.

Among the duties that will be assigned to the municipal police force are dealing with parking violations and conducting inspections on stores.
