Stefan Gavrilovi? would be 22 years old today if he didn't died of sepsis after a routine tonsillectomy. Athough his case is being teached as an exapmle of medical malpractice in Faculty of Medicine, Serbian Court after 18 years still did not convict the doctors.

Epilogue of court's procrastination is evident. In two years from now absolute obsolescence will occur. The doctor's guilt for Stefan's death, confirmed by 14 expert witnesses, will be permanently erased, thanks to Serbian judiciary.
 

- He was 5 years old. He was very intelligent, quiet and lovely boy. He went to "Institute for mother and child" in Belgrade as healthy boy, to have a routine tonsillectomy. Eight days later, he died - says his inconsolable mother Milena.

 

Stefan died in November 4th 1997. But his death did not happen suddenly. High body temperature, fever, suspicious marks and swellings on his body appeared soon after the operation. Doctors said Milena to "relax, that it's just a virus, and that her son will be home tomorrow".

- Doctors evet diagnosed all symtops of seppsis. His body temperature was 39.7, his skin was pale and yellow, his tongue was dry. They diagnosed the symptomps, but they didn't recognized them. Day before he died, my son complained that his whole body hurts, and that he's exhausted.

 

Then dr Bo?idar Vlaji? made a wrong diagnose, Shigella, and ordered the nurses "not to give my son any antibiotics at all". Autopsy later confirmed that the bacteria which led to sepsis was vulnerable to 10 antibiotics. Each one of them could save Stefan's life - says Milena for "Blic".
