Nikolic to be named "EASA protector"

BELGRADE -- Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic will on Saturday attend a meeting of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA) in Salzburg, Austria.

Nikolic will be inaugurated as "EASA protector," his press service announced.

During the one-day visit to Austria, Nikolic will meet Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov.

The EASA was founded on March 7, 1990. Over 1,500 scientists, researchers, philosophers and artists from Europe, Asia and the U.S. are its members, including 29 Nobel Prize laureates, said Tanjug.

The traditional plenum of the EASA, which will include distinguished political, scientific, church, business and social figures, will be a type of a little summit, since Fischer and Ivanov will be there for the 25th anniversary of the organization.

The protector title is honorary, and Nikolic will be a patron to the members of the EASA in Serbia, who are many, the EASA told Tanjug.

Nikolic's political support is also welcome, the EASA stated.

The annual plenum in Salzburg is used to accept new members and appoint protectors.

Fischer and Ivanov were inaugurated as protectors before Nikolic, as well as former presidents of Greece and Croatia Karolos Papoulias and Ivo Josipovic.
