Serbian president talks with Tunisian ambassador

BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic discussed with Tunisian Ambassador Majid Hamlaoui improvements in bilateral relations on Monday.

Nikolic underscored that the two peoples have traditionally good relations, which are fostered and deepened even further, the president's press service said in a release.

"Serbia-Tunisia relations date back to the independence of Tunisia and have since seen continued improvement, especially at political level," the president said, adding that the two countries are among the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement.

"Unfortunately, economic cooperation does not mirror overall relations," the Serbian president said.

The Ambassador voiced confidence that an intergovernmental commission will soon be set up, and a business forum organized on the sidelines of the event, where investors will have an opportunity to exchange information.

In view of the centenary of the landing of the Serbian army in Tunisia during World War I, Nikolic pointed to the importance of marking the anniversary together.

Hamlaoui presented the draft program for the event that will be held on January 9, 2016.

The Tunisian ambassador expressed gladness over the fact that the Serbian president made a historic visit to Tunisia a year ago, and gave a fresh momentum to strengthening relations even further, the release notes.

The Serbian president extended an invitation to his Tunisian counterpart to come to visit Serbia, as it is important to maintain the top-level dialogue, reads the release.
