Education Ministry against prison as venue for Golden Dawn trial

The Ministry of Education is opposed to conducting the trail of extreme fascist Golden Dawn party members in a specially created courtroom at high-security korydallos Prison. Ministry officials believe that this would disrupt the smooth operation of nationwide university entrance exams for students from the 11 schools and two examination centers in the area.

An announcement signed by Education, Culture and Religious Affairs Minister Aristidis Baltas and Alternate Education Minister Tasos Kourakis states:

"Given that the said trial is expected, on the one hand, to last a long period of time and, on the other hand, to be a focus of interest for citizens, organisations, associations, journalists and others, it is obvious that there will be a great disruption of schools that are in close proximity and especially during the period of end-of-year and nationwide university entrance exams."
