MAI's Dajbog: Fines in excess of RON 7 million issued in four days

Fines in excess of RON 7 million were issued over the past four days, spokesperson for the Interior Ministry (MAI) Monica Dajbog said Tuesday.

'The Police and the Gendarmerie issued nearly 26,000 fines, with more than 18,500 of them being traffic fines,' Dajbog said in a press statement.

She added that 173 fines were issued for driving under the influence. Friday to Monday, 1,291 driving licences were withheld and 340 registration certificates were withdrawn.

'An average of 25 road accidents occurred a day. Nearly 6,300 speeding tickets were issued, as the Police used more than 400 radars a day. The busiest traffic was reported on Monday on national road DN1 from Busteni to Predeal, at the entrance to the Pitesti-Bucharest motorway, on national road DN7 Arges County and on national road DN6, Giurgiu County,' said Dajbog.

She added that a rising number of persons and motor vehicles crossing the national borders of Romania was recorded on Easter.

'Friday to Monday, more than 422,000 persons crossed the main border points, double the usual weekend traffic. In order to shorten the time needed for completing the transiting formalities, the Border Police provided additional staff, a measure that will be kept in place for the coming days, as many Romanian nationals working abroad will leave the country,' said the spokesperson.

Dajbog added that the Border Police caught 102 persons as they were trying to cross the borders illegally, 86 of them out of the country.
