Greek engraver wins competition to design logo for a commemorative 2-euro coin
Here’s some good news on the “Greece-Euro” front!
Greek central bank engraver George Stamatopoulos on Thursday won a Europe-wide competition to design the logo for a commemorative two-euro coin to be unveiled in July.
According to DW, his design had been preselected by a jury alongside designs from Spain, Slovenia, Italy and Cyprus.
Stamatopoulos’ entry depicts 12 figures forming a human chain around the EU flag with 12 gold stars on a blue background.
The design was chosen by roughly 30 percent of 100,000 voters in an online competition by the European Commission.
The competition marked the fourth time that euro-area members have decided to collectively issue a commemorative coin: The first was in 2007 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the second time was in 2009 when 16 countries commemorated 10 years of the EMU and the third time in 2012 to mark 10 years of euro currency.
