Romania's Copil advances to quarter-finals of Topshelf Open 2015 ATP tournament in s-Hertogenbosch

Copil, a wildcard participant, defeated the winner of this year's edition of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in one hour and 26 minutes.

Romanian tennis player Marius Copil on Wednesday advanced to the quarter-finals of the men's singles event of the 537,050-euro ATP grass tournament in s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, after defeating Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, the 4th favourite, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Copil, a wildcard participant, defeated the winner of this year's edition of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in one hour and 26 minutes.

Copil, 24 and the world's number 196, scored no less than 15 aces in the match versus more experienced Garcia-Lopez, 32, currently number 34 in the ATP rankings.

For his performance so far, Copil has secured 15,880 euros and 45 ATP points. In the quarter-finals, he meets Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, who defeated Canada's Vasek Pospisil, the 9th favourite, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6).

Copil and Muller, 32 and number 53 in the ATP ranking, have so far met twice, with Muller having defeated Copil in the second round of the 2010 edition of the Eckental Challenger, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), and Copil defeating Muller in the second round of the 2013 edition of the Quimper Challenger, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
