Croat's Reported Execution Draws Condemnation

Countries around the world have expressed sympathy for the family of Tomislav Salopek and support for Croatia following Wednesday's report that ISIS in Egypt had executed him.

The report has yet to be confirmed.

The US on Wednesday said its "thoughts are with his [Salopek's] family, friends and the Croatian people", condemning the act, while pointing out also that it has yet to be confirmed.

"The United States stands shoulder to shoulder with Croatia and with all our friends and partners in the fight against terrorism," the statement concluded.

Britain expressed its support as well. Foreign Minister Phillip Hammond on Wednesday condemned the crime, if it is confirmed, adding: "Britain will stand by Egypt and Croatia in continuing the fight against this inhumane terrorism."

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Wednesday that if the killing was confirmed, this "horrible murder would once again prove the cowardly and barbaric nature of this terrorist organization".

Germany on Wednesday said of ISIS that "this shows the fanatical ideology that threatens everyone" and called for more efforts to defeat ISIS on both a military and political level.

Salopek's wife, Natasa, on Wednesday that she still hoped the reports of her husband's death were incorrect.

She "wishes to believe and hopes that her Tomislav is alive", she said, adding that "hope dies last".

After Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic addressed the nation on Wednesday afternoon, warning it to "fear the worst", President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic also addressed the issue.
