SCANDAL IN KRAGUJEVAC Former mayor Veroljub Stevanovic accused of corruption
A criminal complaint has been filed against Veroljub Stevanovic, a former mayor of the town of Kragujevac in central Serbia.
Serbia's state broadcaster RTS reported on Tuesday that Stevanovic is suspected of "multi-million embezzlement."
The alleged financial abuses are related to city-owned building land.
Current mayor, Radomir Nikolic told a news conference that the complaint was filed with the Special Prosecution in Belgrade, and concerns several persons.
Nikolic - the son of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic who comes from the ranks of the SNS party and who succeeded Stevanovic - also announced that his predecessor will face two more criminal complaints.
Stevanovic started his political career in 1993 as a member of the Serbian assembly from the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). He was elected to the mayor's office in Kragujevac three times: in 1996, 2004, and 2008.
In 2009 Stevanovic became the leader of the Movement Together for Sumadija, and was dismissed as mayor in 2014.
