Bulgaria to Face Germany in Men's Volleyball European Championship Quarterfinal
The Bulgarian men's national volleyball team will face Germany in one of the quarterfinals of the 2015 Volleyball European Championship.
The 29th edition of the tournament, which is co-hosted by two Bulgarian and two Italian cities, began on October 9 and will last until October 18.
The matches from the group stage, which were played in Sofia, Varna, Turin and Busto Arsizio, have been completed and the best eight teams are facing each other in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Bulgaria and Germany already played against each other in the opening match of Pool A, with the co-host recording a convincing 3:0 victory over their opponent (25:20, 25:17, 25:20).
After achieving two 3:2 victories over the other two teams in Pool A - the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, Bulgaria occupied the first place in the final standing and proceeded directly to the quarterfinals.
Germany finished third in Pool A and had to go through the play-offs in order to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
In one of the play-offs, which was played in Sofia on Tuesday, Germany defeated Belgium 3:0 (25:16, 31:29, 25:17).
Thus one of the quarterfinals in Sofia will pit against each other Bulgaria and Germany for the third time in the past several months.
Apart from their Pool A encounter, the two teams also played against each other in the final of the First European Games in Baku in June, which the Germans won 3:1.
The quarterfinal between Bulgaria and Germany starts at 20:45 EET and will be broadcasted live on BNT 1.
In the other quarterfinal in Sofia, the reigning world champion Poland will face Slovenia in a repetition of their Pool C encounter which was won by the Poles 3:1.
