Police officer and soldier killed in southeastern town

One police officer was killed on Jan. 16 after being injured in clashes between security forces and outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the Sur district of Diyarbak?r, southeast Turkey.

The 35-year-old officer, Ali Bulduk, died at the Diyarbak?r Military Hospital and his body was sent to the southern province of Adana for his funeral. 

Separately, one Turkish soldier died early on Jan. 16 from wounds sustained during clashes with PKK militants, while seven others were injured in the fighting, the Turkish Chief of General Staff said. 

U?ur ?ahin, 37, died in hospital on Jan. 16 and his body was laid to rest in K?r?ehir province in Central Anatolia. He had a son and two daughters. 

The soldiers had been in a firefight on Jan. 15 in the Sur district, which has been under a round-the-clock curfew since early Dec. 14, 2015, due to persistent fighting between security forces and PKK militants. 

The clashes have moved to urban centers as security forces try to root out PKK militants who have dug trenches and erected barricades to protect weapon caches they had been reportedly storing during a two-and-a-half-year ceasefire.
