Parliament Rejects Use of Languages other than Bulgarian in Election Campaigns

Bulgaria's Parliament turned down proposals to endorse the use of a language other than Bulgarian in election campaigns, BGNES reported on Tuesday.

Two proposals have been submitted for consideration: by the new chairman of predominantly ethnic Turk party DPS, Mustafa Karadayi, and the expelled DPS chairman and now independent MP Lyutvi Mestan, who founded his own party, DOST, earlier this month.

Both proposals provided for the use of a language other than Bulgarian in election campaigns in case translation into Bulgarian was made available.
