Croatia: "Za dom spremni!" plaque in Jasenovac, Serbs in uproar
BELGRADE - Veterans of Croatia's 1990s military campaign have caused controversy after they put up a plaque in Jasenovac honoring the memory of their fallen comrades, and also included a fascist slogan associated with the WWII genocidal Independent State of Croatia.
The memorial plaque was put up last month in the town of Jasenovac, where the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) set up its largest Second World War concentration camp. According to varying estimates, between 83,000 and 700,000 Serbs, Roma and Jews were murdered there between 1941 and 1945.
The plaque was put up by local veterans and supporters of the Croatian Defense Forces (HSO), a paramilitary group associated with the far-right Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), which was set up in 1990.
