Filip Filipovic named world's top water polo player

BELGRADE - The prestigious US magazine Swimming World has named Serbia's Filip Filipovic male water polo player of the year for 2016.

Filipovic, captain of the Serbia national team, won the long-awaited Olympic gold and the Player of the Tournament Award in Rio de Janeiro, and was subsequently named Best Male Athlete of the Year by the Olympic Committee of Serbia in December.

It is the second consecutive Player of the Year Award for Serbian male water polo players after Dusko Pijetlovic claimed the honour in 2015.

American Ashleigh Johnson was named female water polo player of the year for the third consecutive time.
