The blinding love of Turkey's Trump fans
In the eyes of his sympathizers, U.S. President Donald Trump is always great. Whatever he does, he never looks ugly to them. He may have unsettled the entire world, but Trump fans here in Turkey are still rejoicing. You can never hear them questioning the kind of disaster Trump's presidency is.
Just yesterday they were in favor of an "independent foreign policy." Once upon a time they were nationalist and anti-American. Now they are Trump fanatics.
Is it because Trump has stripped the U.S. of its "superior mind" (üst akıl) and saved us from its games? Is it because he has downgraded the "superior mind" to a mediocre mind? Is it because he has ended the American dream?
No, it is none of these. They love Trump because they find him more suitable in the "savior" role that Barack Obama rejected.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is uncomfortable about Trump's preparations in the Middle East. He has expressed cautious optimism about the new president.
But the Trump lovers in our country are relaxed and content. The entire world may be on a knife-edge because Trump is in the White House, but they are in a blind love.
They are not irritated by the supply of armored vehicles to the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD). The U.S. continues to supply arms to what we call terrorists, but this has not shaken Turkish Trump fans' trust in the new administration.
The new U.S. administration only sees the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as a terrorist organization, while winking at Bashar al-Assad. It is rumored that when the new administration mentions "safe zones" in Syria it really means "PKK cantons." But still nothing can weaken the loyalty to Trump.
