Heavy rain causes serious damage on island of Symi

Local authorities and residents on the island of Symi in the Dodecanese on Tuesday were taking stock of the damage wreaked by heavy rainfall the night before.

The downpour caused serious damage to infrastructure as well as to homes and businesses on the island.

From early on Monday, volunteers started working on repairing damage wreaked to roads and the irrigation network and restoring electricity which was knocked out in many areas. 

Deputy Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios arrived on the island late on Monday to coordinate the effort.
