Greece Halts Refugee Wave From Turkey at Border

"Do not attempt to enter Greece illegally - you will be turned back," he added in a direct warning to migrants hoping to enter Europe.

Michel said the EU supported Greece in its efforts to protect the European Union's external border, as did Croatia, the current head of the rotating EU presidency.

"Croatia's EU Presidency stands by Greece and Bulgaria striving hard to protect EU's borders - We express full solidarity and stand ready to assist," the Croatian government said.

Other Balkan governments echoed this line. "We stand by our neighbours Greece and Bulgaria as they face such a difficult situation. Their national borders are also European borders, and the solution will also have to be European: joint engagement and full solidarity!" North Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov wrote on twitter.

While European and Balkan governments primarily see the new migrant wave in terms of security, those stuck on the border face grim conditions. There are no regular water or food supplies, or accommodation, and children and old ones...
