Janša hosting first debate on future of Europe on Thursday

Ljubljana – Prime Minister Janez Janša will host the first Slovenian debate in the framework of the Conference on the Future of Europe on Thursday. The aim is to formulate a common vision on what kind of Europe Slovenians want.

The debate at Brdo pri Kranju will feature President Borut Pahor, his adviser Ernest Petrič, former Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, jurists Matej Avbelj and Jurij Tompak, and the former MEP for Janša’s Democrats (SDS), Zofija Mazej Kukovič, the prime minister’s office announced.

The pan-European debate was formally launched on Europe Day on 9 May and is designed as an exchange of views on the future development of the bloc, and its role in the new geopolitical circumstances.

As the country presiding the EU in the second half of this year, Slovenia will play the key role of coordinating and representing the views of member states. It will make sure fundamental issues receive due attention and that different views are heard, according to Janša’s office.

“Our goal is to strengthen a shared understanding of the challenges which member states can handle only if they tackle them together at the EU level, and of issues that are easier for member states to address individually and which require autonomy in the framework of the EU.”
