Pensioners plan to work with new govt despite losing advocates

Ljubljana – The Union of Pensioners’ Associations (ZDUS), Slovenia’s biggest organisation of pensioners, plans to work with the new government after two parties that have pensioners at the core of their agenda, the Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS) and the Alenka Bratušek Party (SAB), did not make the cut to enter parliament.

The ZDUS has to work with every government, regardless of its composition, to promote solutions benefiting pensioners, the organisation’s president Janez Sušnik, a former president of the upper chamber of parliament, told the STA as he commented on the outcome of the election.

He said the organisation had worked well with the current government and hoped the new government will lend an ear as well, noting that it had had good relations with every coalition and opposition.

Sušnik does not think DeSUS’s absence from parliament will affect them much, it is simply a matter of agreeing which party will table legislative proposals on their behalf.

He expects “at least minimum standards” to be upheld, most notably compliance with the framework law governing pensions and the indexation of pensions in accordance with the provisions of the law.

But since pensions are too low, more will have to be done to increase wages so that pensions rise as a result, he said.
