49 dead, 140 missing after boat carrying migrants sinks off Yemen: UN agency

A boat carrying more than 200 migrants sank off Yemen, leaving at least 39 dead in the latest disaster on the perilous migration route, a U.N. agency said on Tuesday.

"Tragic incident off #Yemen coast: Boat with 260 migrants sank yesterday. 39 dead, 150 missing, 71 survivors," the International Organisation for Migration said on X, referring to Monday's sinking.

Survivors informed rescuers that the vessel, which was carrying approximately 250 people, sank due to strong winds.

U.N. reports 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year, despite the war in Yemen and recent Houthi attacks on Red Sea ships.
