French tourist killed, wife critically injured in Crete car crash

A 53-year-old French man was killed and his wife critically injured in a road accident Thursday in the Chania area of Crete, where the couple was on holiday.

The man's rented car collided head-on with another vehicle at the exit of Vrysses village in Apokoronas.

The collision was so severe that the Fire Brigade had to extricate the man's body from the car. He was unconscious when taken by ambulance to the hospital. His wife, seriously injured, has been admitted to the Resuscitation Unit at Chania Hospital, where her condition is critical. The Greek driver of the second vehicle involved is being treated for light injuries at the same hospital.

Sources indicate that the collision occurred because one of the vehicles entered the opposite lane.

An inquiry is being conducted by the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) traffic police. [AMNA]
