Mitsotakis on Skopje: If they continue like this, they nullify any process of immediate convergence with the European family

Messages and warnings were sent to North Macedonia by Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his attendance at the EU Summit of the 27, which took place yesterday in Brussels. The Prime Minister raised the issue of the Prespa Agreement violations by the new leadership of the neighboring country and clarified that if Skopje insists on the same course, they will effectively cancel their European path.

“I took the initiative and informed my colleagues at the European Council about the developments in North Macedonia, about the fact that both the President and the appointed Prime Minister are essentially and directly violating the Prespa Agreement, ignoring the erga omnes in practice and choosing to use a name other than the constitutionally designated name of the country for internal use, which is entirely contrary to the spirit of the Prespa Agreement,” the Prime Minister initially stated.

“I informed them about this unfortunate development and also made it absolutely clear that if Skopje continues on this path, they will essentially make it extremely difficult – if not nullify in practice – any process of immediate convergence with the European family. So I think everyone should understand the consequences of their actions and know that compliance with the European acquis obviously involves the faithful adherence to international agreements that have been signed by both parties,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis added.
