Fire in Stamata: “Resident saw arsonist dressed as firefighter throwing gas canisters” says Dionysos deputy mayor

Throughout the evening firefighters and volunteers continued the work of extinguishing the firefront in in Stamata. The fire, which broke out shortly after 4pm on Sunday afternoon in a wooded area in Stamata next to residential areas and amidst strong winds, no longer has an active front after the tremendous efforts of ground forces and the decisive contribution of air assets.

Regarding the fire that caused several damages, Dionysos deputy mayor George Komninakis told OPEN’s morning show that a resident claimed to have seen a man dressed as a firefighter throwing gasoline.

“I saw video from the control centre. There was one fire and six minutes later we saw five fires lined up. That can’t happen by itself. They told me they saw a scooter and the driver dressed in a fireman’s uniform was throwing gas,” he said.

Meanwhile, there are reports from residents that they heard several explosions as the fire was starting.

The fire broke out in a forested area in Stamata next to residential areas and amidst strong winds, after the tremendous efforts of the ground forces and the decisive contribution of the air assets, it no longer has an active front.

Sure enough, a 45-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest, was taken by ambulance to the Kapandriti Health Center, but unfortunately, despite the efforts of the doctors, he died.

At the same time, there are reports of burnt houses, with OPEN reports mentioning at least two cases.
