June 2024: Extremely high temperatures across the country

According to the network of 53 weather stations of meteo.gr of the National Observatory of Athens (NAO), which have been operating continuously since 2010, this June the average value of maximum daily temperatures was extremely high in the whole country, compared to the average for the period 2010-2019.

This June was characterized by many consecutive days with large positive temperature deviations and was o the warmest June since 2010 across the country by a wide margin over the second. Central Greece and the Peloponnese recorded the largest positive temperature deviations, with average monthly values ranging up to 4.8 °C above normal for the season.

The temperature of the region is above normal for most of the year.

The next graph shows the ranking of the month of June by year, according to the average monthly maximum temperature.

For all geographic regions of the country, June 2024 was an extremely warm month, the warmest since 2010, with the average values for the month being nearly 2-3°C above the second warmest (June 2012).

Very large positive deviations were recorded across the country in the first 15 days and especially in Central Greece, the Peloponnese and Crete on 10-13 June of 10-12°C above normal for the season (44.5°C at Voukolies in Chania on 13 June 2024).

Small negative deviations were recorded only on the Aegean islands after the 20th of the month with the parallel prevalence of a north winds.

In addition to the many consecutive days with positive deviations, significant absolute maximum temperature records were broken at 11 stations of the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, which started operating before 2014.

The following table shows the 11 absolute maximum temperature records recorded in June 2024.

In Athens, the average monthly maximum temperature deviation was +4.0 °C, with 29 of the 30 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season. In Thessaloniki, 28 days of the month were warmer than the 2010-2019 seasonal average, where the average maximum temperature for the month was +2.6 ºC above normal.

The average temperature of the region was above normal at the average level of the year.

In 70% of climate stations at least 29 days out of 30 of the month were warmer than normal. The last graph shows the deviation values for all 53 weather stations.
