RAS head charged over Tempe railway accident

The Larissa Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against the head of the Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) in connection with the fatal Tempe train crash, following a recommendation from the appellate investigator. The charges include intentional and repeated disruption of transportation safety through omission. 

The February 2023 collision in Tempe, central Greece, was the country's deadliest rail accident, resulting in 57 deaths and numerous injuries. The ongoing criminal investigation is examining the implementation of Contract 717 and the deficiencies in signaling and safety measures on the railway. 

As part of the preliminary investigation, which was initiated by a complaint from victims' relatives, breach of duty charges have also been filed against three preliminary investigative officers from the Fire Service and a senior officer.
